Scratch CT-2 off your “potential pick-up” lists, folks.

It would have been a bit of a long-shot in any case, but Bob Simmons evidently ain’t interested in a re-match.

Former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons has told the man who beat him in November that he won’t run again in 2008 if he lands a state job as a business advocate, according to a published report.

Simmons lost to Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT,2) by 91-votes out of nearly 250k cast in what was a really, really bad year for New England Republicans (just ask former congresswoman Nancy Johnson) and would have been a formidable challenger in a rematch during a presidential election year.

In fact, Simmons is widely belived to be just about the only Republican (and yes, he’s more RINO than not) who could be competative in CT-2 (Cook rates the district as D+8 – pdf). Having lived there for 12-years (1988-2000) and with friends still in the area who give me the “lay of the land” on a periodic basis, I’m compelled to agree. If anything, the district (like the rest of New England) has trended steadily left over the last decade.

Simmons was nominated to the state post by newly re-elected Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell. He must be confirmed by the veto-proof majority Democrat legislature, but there is little to indicate Simmons will have any trouble with confirmation.
