No, Liz Carter, this is for black candidates only

Liz Carter will not be permitted to speak at a Candidates Forum for Georgia’s 4th District tonight.

Not because she’s a Republican, or for any other reason than because she is white.

The following notice went up on her facebook page earlier today:

Just informed “Black Candidates” Only Tonight” So because I’m white I’m not invited to participate even though it is a Democrat and Republican debate?

One can only imagine the hue and cry from the liberal blogosphere if the situation were reversed and a black candidate were not permitted at a forum for, say Georgia’s highly conservative 6th or 7th districts.

Liz Carter has been highly critical of the Democrat incumbent Hank Johnson, who recently made a comment about Guam capsizing due to the large military presence on the island.  Prior to Johnson, the seat was held by Cynthia McKinney, who lost the seat after she assaulted a Capitol security officer when he did not rec

ognize her as a member of Congress.

A high-level source from Carter’s campaign stated she was told directly this morning that this forum is for “black candidates” only, despite the campaign trying to secure a seat in the forum for some time.  According to my source, Liz will be permitted to attend and be recognized in the crowd, but she will not be permitted to speak as part of the forum.  The Other McCain reports two other Republicans, one white and one Hispanic, were also barred from the event.

GA-04 is heavily African-American, but significant swathes are also white, Hispanic and Asian.  Despite this, NewsMakers Live, the event sponsor, has only permitted black candidates.  Carter was recently endorsed by the Morehouse College Republicans (Morehouse is a traditional black college), but this doesn’t seem to matter to NewsMakers Live.  They only want black candidates.

NewsMakers Live is a private organization and can conduct its forum as it sees fit.  That said, Carter is a serious contender for the Republican nomination in GA-04.  Excluding her, particularly on the basis of her race, seems highly unethical.

After all, aren’t people supposed to be judged “not by the…color of their skin, but by the content of their character”?
