It is not always easy to see the real Middle East in the midst of all the warring stereotypes emanating from that region.  But it is a real place with real people with normal human impulses.  And one of the most enduring human impulses is to travel, to see new things, to get away from it all.

And right now Dubai is cashing in on this perennial desire.  Most recently known for its infamous real estate bust which rocked investors worldwide, Dubai is now enjoying an influx of vacation travelers, even in the toasty summer months.  As the region’s travelers avoid more traditonal locales such as Egypt and Syria because of extreme civil unrest, they are increasingly turning to the Gulf kingdom. With spanking new infrastructure and an array of malls and glitzy hotels, Dubai is offering just what they are looking for in troubled times- a place to relax and shop. And since there are no Global Warming scolds and no energy shortages, guilt-free and exuberant air conditioning!
