Irene fizzles, Tropical Storm Jose springs to life
Tropical Storm Jose has popped onto the map, but there’s “no way Jose” is coming to the United States. This one will bring some stormy weather to Bermuda, and otherwise stay out to sea.
Behind Jose, fresh off the coast of Africa, there is an area of thunderstorms that could become our next named or numbered system. We’ll keep a close eye on this one as it moves west.

Irene Moves On: Millions Without Power, 18 Dead
Irene, downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, swept through the Northeast today, leaving at least 18 dead in its wake, millions without power and an estimated $7 billion to $13 billion in damages.
“We’re not out of the woods yet. Irene remains a large and potentially dangerous storm,” U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.

Hurricane Irene blasts New York
NEW YORK – Hurricane Irene tore Sunday into New York, hammering Manhattan’s skyscrapers with fierce winds and threatening to flood the financial district after killing at least nine people along the US east coast.
The first hurricane to hit the Big Apple for a generation swept in overnight, accompanied by lightening, reports of tornados and deafening rainfall. Wind strength grew steadily and was forecast to cross the 50 miles an hour mark before dawn, then up to a peak of 80 miles an hour.

Hurricane Irene weakened Sunday but maintained its Category 1 status as it moved up the East Coast, shutting down New York and other cities in the storm’s path.
By late Saturday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the edge of Hurricane Irene had reached the city and it was no longer safe to be outside.
