Under the Fedora: Selective Outrage, DOMA and my Dad

Remember how the MSM was (rightly) outraged when some church leaders decided to handle the sex scandal internally. Remember the outrage and the blanket condemnations? Well there was a real interesting bit of news out of Occupy Wall Street this week.

A sex fiend barged into a woman’s tent and sexually assaulted her at around 6 a.m., said protesters, who chased him from the park.

“Pervert! Pervert! Get the f–k out!” said vigilante Occupiers, who never bothered to call the cops.

“They were shining flashlights in his face and yelling at him to leave,” said a woman who called herself Leslie, but refused to give her real name.

She said that weeks earlier another woman was raped.

“We don’t tell anyone,” she said. “We handle it internally. I said too much already.” (emphasis mine)

Other the NY Post article outside of the right side of the blogosphere this has produced no coverage.

For the left and the MSM nothing and nobody is more important than advancing the cause and voicing the right positions.

Ask Nina Burleigh, or even better ask Juanita Broaddrick.

What has produced MSN outrage is the Herman Cain “smoking” ad. Bob Scheifer challenged Cain on it directly on Sunday and the panel on this week made fun of it. The smoking ad might feed the MSM’s obsession but the Rush Limbaugh ad they are ignoring is the one that might win him the nomination.

The meme on Cain remains he is the “Not Romney” as Cokie Roberts insisted on ABC this week. The MSM has been saying this for 4 weeks now. If Cain is still ahead in the middle of November then they will start saying he is this month’s not Romney.

One last Cain thing, just before I submitted my column the Herman Cain allegations came up. There was a priceless exchange on Morning Joe between Willie Geist and Johnathan Martin this morning (via NewsBusters):

WILLIE GEIST: Hey Jonathan, what are the allegations specifically as you understand them? There’s obviously a wide range in sexual harassment. What did he do?

JONATHAN MARTIN: We-, we-, well we have to be careful about that obviously, because we’re sensitive to –

GEIST: Of course –

MARTIN: — the sourcing involved here. And also, what actually happened to these women as well–we want to be sensitive to that, too. It includes both verbal and physical gestures. These women felt uncomfortable, they were unhappy about their treatment, and they complained to both colleagues and senior officials. In one case it involved, I think, inviting a woman up to a hotel room of Cain’s on the road. Um, but, we-, we-, we’re just not going to get into the details of exactly what happened with these women beside what’s in the story.

I guess that kind of certainty trumps the ambiguity of the assault allegations at the Occupy protests doesn’t it?

Speaking of Romney he has flipped flopped on Climate Change to my position. I think Moe Lane is exactly right on Romney, Conservatives aren’t afraid that they can’t force Mitt Romney to take conservative positions, we are afraid we can’t force him to Keep them.

I have had very little good to say about Jon Huntsman as a Republican candidate but his statement on Mitt Romney is exactly right Mitt is a perfectly lubricated weather-vane.”

I’ll say this; a Romney Presidency would be interesting in the sense that during a second term with no more elections necessary to win we might find out what he actually believes.

This week’s winter storm has been the biggest hit we’ve had in the city since the ice storm of a few years ago. There is going to be some pain involved, the City has cancelled school for the rest of the week, but the real impact might be on the Mayoral race in Fitchburg, where the incumbent mayor Lisa Wong was closing the gap on the challenger Counselor Joe Solomito. How this storm is handled this week will have a huge impact on the election next week.

On twitter last week I got into a debate with Gabe Malor of Ace of Spades HQ on DADT and the suit over DOMA. I brought up the fact that although I had been agnostic on DADT, people had been telling me forever that the repeal of DADT was pretty much all about challenging DOMA and nothing really else. We had a very interesting exchange on the subject:

DaTechGuy: …They said this is all about a backdoor method to challenge DOMA on a national level, and how do you answer those people because when I look at this suit and, it I mean it didn’t take two months for this to happen. How do you answer people who were saying ‘this was the idea all along’?

Gabe Malor: The answer for the people who say this is an attack on DOMA on the national level, to really get rid of DOMA at the end. The answer is they’re correct.

It’s very rare that we get such candor but Gabe is a stand up guy. I said it on the air, and I’ll say it again. I think the proponents of gay marriage from the first civil unions ruling from VT to DADT have sold a bill of good right along and I resent it.

BTW the full show is available here, with Jimmie Bise of the Sundries Shack, Steve Eggleston of No Runny Eggs and Bob Belvedere of Camp of the Saints as well as Gabe. It’s a keeper.

I am sick of Zombie and Vampire movies and TV shows and I think the general public is too.

Just got the word that Tony LaRussa stepped down as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals after leading them to a World Series win made all the more improbable by making the playoffs on the last day of the season and twice being one strike away from elimination. Talk about going out on top.

Finally today my father would have been 90 years old. He has been dead 24 years now. He lived to meet my wife to be but didn’t live to see my wedding or my two sons. As time has passed I can see more and more how many times his wise advice would have made a difference for me and mine.
