Public Notice Letters to Obama, Boehner Urge Immediate Action on Fiscal Cliff

Arlington, Va. – Last night President Obama asserted that the sequester portion of the fiscal cliff “will not happen,” yet, according to Politico, he and Speaker Boehner have not spoken about the impending spending cuts in nearly four months. In response, Public Notice Executive Director Gretchen Hamel wrote letters to President Obama and Speaker Boehner asking them to initiate the negotiations necessary to turn that rhetoric into a reality and agree on responsible cuts to replace the sequester.

“President Obama and Speaker Boehner’s failure to meet to discuss the fiscal cliff is the height of irresponsibility as we speed perilously close to the deadline for action,” Hamel said. “President Obama’s puzzling statement at last night’s debate that sequestration ‘will not happen’ only adds to the confusion and frustration. This issue has been defined by partisanship and demagoguing, with politicians clearly more concerned about their future than that of the American people. The message of this letter is simple—stop the rhetoric, stop the cheap shots, and do your job.”
