While heated rhetoric percolates through the airwaves on gun control, aided by the usual opportunism of our political and media classes, reality stays the same. One of the most enduring realities is the equalizing force of firearms. It gives women, so often the victims of aggression by males when only physical strength is in the picture, a fighting chance. Of course, any firearms user must respect the power of her weapon and know how to use it responsibly. The point is hilariously demonstrated by Delta Burke, who created one of TV’s iconic comic characters in the classic series Designing Women.
The imbalance of power between a tyranny-bent government and ordinary citizens is even more striking. That is why the Founders, who experienced first hand the overreach of government power, put the Second Amendment into the Constitution. And the British Crown of the 18th century was not some oriental despotism, but arguably the most enlightened government of its day. It ruled, after all, during the vaunted Age of Reason. If it could go off the rails, any government can.
