Bankrupting America’s New Video: Listen to Newport News

Arlington, Va. – Bankrupting America, a project of Public Notice, today released a new video featuring testimonials from residents of Hampton Roads and Newport News, Va., about their concerns for the economy, the looming sequester spending cuts and what they hope to hear from President Obama during his visit.  While many were glad  the president was visiting the region, their message  was loud and clear:  Americans have been tightening their belts in this economy, and it’s time for Washington to do the same.

The interviews were conducted at the Jefferson Flea Market in Newport News on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, and focused on whether Washington should be able to cut three cents on the dollar in federal spending to offset the sequester.  President Obama will be speaking about the federal budget crisis and the sequester just down the street from the Jefferson Flea Market at Newport News Shipbuilding later today.

Bankrupting America: Listen To Newport News

Public Notice Executive Director Gretchen Hamel issued the following statement on the video:

“If Washington believes the sequester will be as damaging as they say, they should listen to the people in Newport News and cut three cents on the dollar to make sure it doesn’t happen.  Americans look at Washington and see nothing but waste and dysfunction.  The idea that our elected officials can’t find three cents on the dollar to trim back at a time when our country is more than $16 trillion in debt isn’t credible.  The shoppers at the Jefferson Flea Market understand we can’t keep spending more than we take in. When is Washington going to finally get it?”
