It’s the Way He Lost That Bothers Me

John McCain did America a favor last night and lost the Michigan Primary to Mitt Romney. That was thoughtful of him, because I believe his legislative history on taxation and immigration would make him a potentially detrimental US President. However, I’m bothered by the manner in which he lost last night’s Michigan Primary.

John McCain lost because he told people the truth. He explained to Michigan that their political leadership, their unions and their corporate executives had spent the last 30 years trashing the Michigan economy. He told them that they were not going to get back the jobs that the automotive industry had steadily lost there since the late 1960’s. He told them it was time to get over that unfortunate fact of life and move on.

Mitt Romney, on the other hand, went Pander Bear and promised them $20Bil in Federal Assistance. The voters got over John McCain, and moved over to Mitt Romney. It was GOP socialism that won the Michigan Primary.

“I’ve got cars in my bloodstream,” he said the day before the election.

If Mitt Romney thinks that sending $20Bil to Michigan is any more logical or good for the economy than buying 1 trillion gallons of ethanol from the Yeoman Caucus Farmers of Iowa, he’s been sucking too much hydrocarbon pollution from an automotive tailpipe. The good news scenario involves this pledge being similar in chemical composition to that which the male bovine leaves behind when he squats briefly after eating.

This sort of political butt kissing gives America bridges to nowhere; both metaphorical and real. Every Republican hates earmarks, but the ones in Iowa think ethanol subsidies are “different.” The ones in Michigan think bailing out the Iacoccas who drive American auto makers into the ditch is equally “different.” Even Mr. Libertarian, Ron Paul has a bunch of shrimp fisherman who exhibit traits which are similarly “different.”

John McCain has faults in both temperament and ideology that make him less amenable to doing well as President than Fred D. Thompson, but when he goes to Iowa and condemns ethanol, and he goes to Michigan and condemns Chrysleresque bail-outs of inefficient manufacturing firms, he fights for the American taxpayer. People all over America get up way too early in the morning and come home later than they’d like to at night. Both Mom and Dad have to work to make it by and the children sometimes actually see Mommy and Daddy less than three hours on a typical weekday.

When John McCain tells Michiganders and Iowans that these hard working Americans do not deserve to be screwed against the wall for their bull manure subsidies, he continues his honorable and courageous service to his nation. I’ve stated my reasons why I’ll vote, blog for and endorse Republican candidates other than John McCain. However, to see him lose against specifically because he cared too much for America’s future to promise the greedy short term pork pills is just wrong.

There is no excuse for a conservative party to vote against John McCain, Fred Thompson or even the execrable Ron Paul for fighting against pork. Sometime in the not too distant future, we all will end up paying for these boondoggles. Mitt Romney won’t have a plan to bail us out when that tragic day comes to pass.
