When President Bush ran for president the first time, the word “gravitas” was used by the entire media to refer to what they perceived as his lack of experience and substance.
"Gravitas" was even chosen as the word of the day on March14th, 2000.
word of the day
Why haven’t we heard the word again in this campaign? Senator McCain has plenty of gravitas and Senator Obama has very little of it.
D.D. Myers, President Clinton’s former Press Secretary, said recently: “Senator Obama doesn’t have to be perceived as a better Commander in Chief, he just needs to be perceived as a credible Commander in Chief.”
How different things are when the person lacking gravitas is a Democrat. The media is working overtime to give Mr. Obama gravitas. I heard today that the three major Broadcast Networks will be broadcasting from Iraq when the Junior Senator is finally in Iraq for the first time, to evaluate the situation on the ground, even though he has already given his Iraq speech and proclaimed Iraq a failed war which he will end.
Can the media build a resume for a candidate who lacks gravitas? They are certainly going to try. By the end of the campaign many Americans will have been misled into perceiving Senator Obama as not only a credible Commander in Chief, but the better one for America as well.
