Caleb Howe has begun to post about his trip to Turkey on Red State. I am looking forward to his reporting from that fascinating and strategically critical nation.

The Middle East is a vast place with a storied history, one of the world’s great religions (not to be confused with the perversion practiced by Al Qaeda or even Saudi fundamentalism) and very diverse social structures.

One of the most forward looking places is Dubai, which is rapidly emerging as a globalcommercial and financial hub. The joy of You Tube is its portal-like ability to peer into far away lands. The first video shown below is about Emirates Airlines, which now flies to five continents from its Dubai hub and has an international reputation for superb service. Pay close atttention to the flight map; Dubai is just a short hop from Iran’s theocracy and its probable pursuit of nuclear weapons. The second video illustrates the Dubai building boom.

In 1974, I drove from France to Beirut, Lebanon, through Turkey

on my way to Arabic language studies in the US Embassy in Beirut [later destroyed in a car bomb blast after I departed]. I have been to every member of the Arab League [except Libya and Djibouti!], plus multiple trips to Turkey, Pakistan, the Muslim parts of India and Indonesia.

Part of Dubai's booming prosperity is derived from its being the favorite overseas [fifty minutes by jet flight from Iran] shopping and drinking venue for Iranians who want to indulge in sins not permitted in their puritanical homeland.

Sadly, much of the Middle East is engaged in self-destructive behavior which has nothing to do with Israel, which the countries of the region all blame when they are actually trying to undercut each other.

I'm afraid that a naif like Obama will only prod these lunatic lands into further testing of American support for Israel, and engage in more destructive behavior.
