Website launches early to cover NY-23 special election

Democrats growing government on all fronts -- Barney Frank

Lake Placid, NY

A team of talented writers from the new website 73wire.com have fanned out across New York District -23 in order to record the remarkable rise of support for Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman over his entrenched Democrat and Republican opposition, Bill Owens and Dede Scozzafava.

A longshot third party candidate, Hoffman has captured the endorsements of a large number of high profile conservatives, including former Alaska Gov Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson and Sen Jim DeMint.

Coming from a distant third place a recent Basswood Research poll, commissioned by the Club For Growth, finds Hoffman now in the lead in the district with 31 percent, with Owens and Scozzafava trailing with 27 and 29 percent respectively.

Many see this race as a Bellweather race, as new support for conservative ideals battle the entrenched leadership in the two major parties. If Hoffman wins it could send a message to both the Democratic and Republican parties that the American people are much more conservative in their ideals than the two parties have become.

Hoffman is a Republican, and would have challenged Scozzafava had there been a primary. Because it was a special election, and no primary was held, the NY Republican party simply chose Scozzafava as the candidate -- prompting Hoffman to run on the Conservative Party plank.

Kabul, Afghanistan

Six foreign UN staff members were killed and nine others wounded when the Taliban attacked a guesthouse being used by the United Nations to house its people in Kabul, Afghanistan.

"This attack will not, I repeat, will not deter the UN from continuing its work to reconstruct a war-torn country and to build a better future for the Afghan people," said Kai Eide, head of the UN mission in Kabul.

Quote:

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to the Associated Press.

He said three Taliban militants with suicide vests, grenades and machine guns had carried out the assault.

The Taliban is stepping up its attacks in Afghanistan as the country prepares next week for a second round of voting on the disputed presidential elections. The Taliban efforts are seen as an attempt to derail the election process by spreading fear.

Washington, DC

Rep Barney Frank, powerful Democrat Chairman of the House Banking Committee, admitted in an interview with Ralph Nader that Democrats are working to increase the size and power of the federal government on all fronts -- into all aspects of American lives.

“We Are Trying On Every Front to Increase the Role of Government,” Frank told Nader.
