Particularly 24-hours from a make-or-break debate for the guy who's currently polling behind just about everywhere.
That said, I hope this report is wrong on so many levels it will make The One's tiny little brain spin when Johnny Mac beats him senseless about Fred/Fan/CRA tomorrow night.
Patterico: It's Over, Because the McCain Camp Refuses to Fight Back on Fannie, Freddie, and CRAAs that US News blog post said, the McCain camp thinks it's "too complicated" to explain the current crisis to the American people, so they're going to let Barack Obama claim it was all the Republicans' and McCain's fault.
I have to tell you, I don't see what's "too complicated" to understand. Democrats were big fans of extending lines of credit in the 100's of thousands to people who had no business receiving such lines of credit - all in the name of "expanding home ownership". And they were more than happy to use the power of government (through the CRA) to make that happen. Only the US Taxpayer (through Fred and Fan), and not so much the lender or lendee, was on the hook if the predictable - as in, the lendees were eventually unable to make the payments once the unicorn fart gas ran out of the housing bubble - happened. Complicating matters were the Clinton-era Democrat overseers of Fred and Fan - almost to a man current advisors to The One, by the way - came up with the brilliant idea of "capitalizing" all that debt in a way that turned "junk" rated debt into "AAA" rated debt - all backed by the US Taxpayer.
Republicans have, over the last decade, tried more than a dozen times to bring some adult supervision to this disaster-in-the-making, only to be thwarted at every turn by self-same Democrats including, drumroll please, The One.
And so now we're stuck with lots of people burried under mounds of debt they should never have had in the first place, with lots of empty houses, a stock-market that is tanking, and a recession right over the horizon, all because Democrats thought extending credit to people to buy houses they can't afford was a swell little piece of social engineering.
What's so freaking complicated about that?
