Megan McArdle may be realizing what we have been saying is true all along. Let’s hope this bit of introspection spreads.

a few more people would think like this:

Sebastian Mallaby wisely argues that reducing Uncle Sam’s budget deficit is desirable, but he unwisely supposes that the only means of doing so is raising taxes (“McCain’s Convenient Untruth,” September 8). Not once in his column does he plead for reduced spending.

If Mr. Mallaby’s brother-in-law persistently lived beyond his means by borrowing money to buy lots of luxury automobiles, vacations in Tahiti, and expensive gifts for sponging friends, would Mr. Mallaby scold his brother-in-law only for earning too little income? Would Mr. Mallaby’s advice be limited to “Earn more money!”? Would he not also recommend that his brother-in-law spend less?

Clearly, the most straightforward way for his brother-in-law to avoid bankruptcy is for him reduce his expenditures. And while advising him also to earn more income is generally a good idea, such advice would be irresponsible and downright anti-social if the brother-in-law’s chief source of income is robbery (that is, taking money by force from productive people).

Sincerely, Donald J. Boudreaux

But Uncle Sam now finds himself nursing a very sick platypus. The next president and Congress will have to decide the long-term future of Fannie and Freddie. One option is to nationalize them, putting the federal government in direct control of the mortgage market. The danger there is that political pressure would create too-generous borrowing terms and hesitancy to foreclose, creating losses for taxpayers.

The government could stabilize Fannie and Freddie, then turn them back to private ownership while insisting on more capital cushion. But private owners could again run them into the ground again.

A third option would be to break the companies into smaller pieces, and then privatize them. Each little piece, by itself, would be not be “too big to fail.” Mortgage rates would be slightly higher without an implicit guarantee that the government would step in at times of trouble. But with proper regulation, such a litter of baby Fannies might create actual market competition. What a concept.

Where did I read that, you ask?

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s editorial page. Flabbergasted is about the only word I can come up with. A small-government, free market solution (although including that strange notion of “proper regulation”…whatever that is) in one of the nation’s most socialist of news papers. Flabbergasted.

From Jawa: Israeli Pensioner Affairs Minister Says Israel Should Kidnap Ahmadinejad

Quote:
The Israeli pensioner affairs minister, Rafi Eitan, who was a former top operative for Mossad told Der Spiegel that if Israeli officers are kidnapped then Israeli should do likewise. He then went on to say that Israel should kidnap Iranian President Ahmadinejad and bring him to trial in The Hague.

Quote:
"A man like Ahmadinejad who threats the existence of the state of Israel and is also preparing for it is worthy of being brought before the international court in The Hague even if it is by means of abduction"

Per Politico, we have this little jewel of wisdom regarding the selection of Sarah Palin-

"...South Carolina Democratic chairwoman Carol Fowler sharply attacked Sarah Palin today, saying John McCain had chosen a running mate " whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”
She goes on to add this-

“Among Democratic women and even among independent women, I don’t think it helped him,” she said.

Told of McCain's boost in the new ABC/Washington Post among white women following the Palin pick, Fowler said: "Just anecdotally, I believe that those white women are Republican women anyway."

Every single democrat should have to go on the record and denounce this filth. But we know they won't.

On a side note-one has to wonder if this Carol Fowler is any relation to the former SC Dem chairman, Don Fowler who made those snide comments about God being on their side since He sent Gustav to disrupt the GOP conventions. Enquiring minds want to know.

As for us. I say we just stand back and watch the show. No need to get in the way of self destruction.

"Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a longtime supporter of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin that "certainly there's an initial excitement about having a woman on the ticket. It's a novelty ... the Democrats had a female on the ticket 24 years ago."
