We just had a HUGE Earthquake here in CA
Wow I'm literally still moving from side to side!

More on this as It comes in!

Quake was a rumbling noise slight shaking followed by a a violent jolt and rocking that lasted for about 20 or 30 seconds followed by swaying from side to side!

Update 11:42 official time... 5.8 on the richter scale a couple miles east of Chino hills CA - felt in San Diego and as far as Las Vegas

Update2 It looks like most of us out here weathered this fairly well so far -- no injuries and just minor damage. reports are still coming in we' probably won't have a complete picture until later tonight!

Update3 Quake downgraded to 5.4 by the USGS So far 27 aftershocks.

CNN reporting

Quote:
A magnitude-5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said. Chino Hills is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.

A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.

CNN's Ed Lavandera was at Disneyland with his family and felt the temblor. He said the shaking lasted about 5 seconds.

No luck he's very near the epicenter and I just heard phone lines and such are down!

DocJ's picture

Yep - it does sound like he was sitting pretty close to Ground Zero for this one.

It was centered in Chino Hills. I'm in Moreno Valley.

That's about 30-40 miles dependong in exactly where the epicenter was.

We have to deal with the occasional Hurricane up here in the Peoples' Republic and I can live with that, but quakes scare the (redacted) out of me.

Glad to hear you're A-OK.

I got errors from you when I tried to reply to your message, which of course made me wonder if you lost connectivity, heh.

But that was a real one alright. Had it lasted longer than it did, I'd have been concerned about things falling down.
