From the Gatestone Institute By Soeren Kern

Islamic extremists are stepping up the creation of “no-go” areas in European cities that are off-limits to non-Muslims.

Many of the “no-go” zones function as microstates governed by Islamic Sharia law. Host-country authorities effectively have lost control in these areas and in many instances are unable to provide even basic public aid such as police, fire fighting and ambulance services.

The “no-go” areas are the by-product of decades of multicultural policies that have encouraged Muslim immigrants to create parallel societies and remain segregated rather than become integrated into their European host nations.

In Britain, for example, a Muslim group called Muslims Against the Crusades has launched a campaign to turn twelve British cities – including what it calls “Londonistan” – into independent Islamic states. The so-called Islamic Emirates would function as autonomous enclaves ruled by Islamic Sharia law and operate entirely outside British jurisprudence.

The Islamic Emirates Project names the British cities of Birmingham, Bradford, Derby, Dewsbury, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Luton, Manchester, Sheffield, as well as Waltham Forest in northeast London and Tower Hamlets in East London as territories to be targeted for blanket Sharia rule.

In the Tower Hamlets area of East London (also known as the Islamic Republic of Tower Hamlets), for example, extremist Muslim preachers, called the Tower Hamlets Taliban, regularly issue death threats to women who refuse to wear Islamic veils. Neighborhood streets have been plastered with posters declaring “You are entering a Sharia controlled zone: Islamic rules enforced.” And street advertising deemed offensive to Muslims is regularly vandalized or blacked out with spray paint.

sharia-zone-pamphel11In the Bury Park area of Luton, Muslims have been accused of “ethnic cleansing” by harassing non-Muslims to the point that many of them move out of Muslim neighborhoods. In the West Midlands, two Christian preachers have been accused of “hate crimes” for handing out gospel leaflets in a predominantly Muslim area of Birmingham. In Leytonstone in east London, the Muslim extremist Abu Izzadeen heckled the former Home Secretary John Reid by saying: “How dare you come to a Muslim area.”

In France, large swaths of Muslim neighborhoods are now considered “no-go” zones by French police. At last count, there are 751 Sensitive Urban Zones (Zones Urbaines Sensibles, ZUS), as they are euphemistically called. A complete list of the ZUS can be found on a French government website, complete with satellite maps and precise street demarcations. An estimated 5 million Muslims live in the ZUS, parts of France over which the French state has lost control.

Muslim immigrants are taking control of other parts of France too. In Paris and other French cities with high Muslim populations, such as Lyons, Marseilles and Toulouse, thousands of Muslims are closing off streets and sidewalks (and by extension, are closing down local businesses and trapping non-Muslim residents in their homes and offices) to accommodate overflowing crowds for Friday prayers. Some mosques have also begun broadcasting sermons and chants of “Allahu Akbar” via loudspeakers into the streets.

The weekly spectacles, which have been documented by dozens of videos posted on (here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here), and which have been denounced as an “occupation without tanks or soldiers,” have provoked anger and disbelief. But despite many public complaints, local authorities have declined to intervene because they are afraid of sparking riots.

In the Belgian capital of Brussels (which is 20% Muslim), several immigrant neighborhoods have become “no-go” zones for police officers, who frequently are pelted with rocks by Muslim youth. In the Kuregem district of Brussels, which often resembles an urban war zone, police are forced to patrol the area with two police cars: one car to carry out the patrols and another car to prevent the first car from being attacked. In the Molenbeek district of Brussels, police have been ordered not to drink coffee or eat a sandwich in public during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

In Germany, Chief Police Commissioner Bernhard Witthaut, in an August 1 interview with the newspaper Der Westen, revealed that Muslim immigrants are imposing “no-go” zones in cities across Germany at an alarming rate.

The interviewer asked Witthaut: “Are there urban areas – for example in the Ruhr – districts and housing blocks that are “no-go areas,” meaning that they can no longer be secured by the police?” Witthaut replied: “Every police commissioner and interior minister will deny it. But of course we know where we can go with the police car and where, even initially, only with the personnel carrier. The reason is that our colleagues can no longer feel safe there in twos, and have to fear becoming the victim of a crime themselves. We know that these areas exist. Even worse: in these areas crimes no longer result in charges. They are left ‘to themselves.’ Only in the worst cases do we in the police learn anything about it. The power of the state is completely out of the picture.”

In Italy, Muslims have been commandeering the Piazza Venezia in Rome for public prayers. In Bologna, Muslims repeatedly have threatened to bomb the San Petronio cathedral because it contains a 600-year-old fresco inspired by Dante’s Inferno which depicts Mohammed being tormented in hell.

In the Netherlands, a Dutch court ordered the government to release to the public a politically incorrect list of 40 “no-go” zones in Holland. The top five Muslim problem neighborhoods are in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. The Kolenkit area in Amsterdam is the number one Muslim “problem district” in the country. The next three districts are in Rotterdam – Pendrecht, het Oude Noorden and Bloemhof. The Ondiep district in Utrecht is in the fifth position, followed by Rivierenwijk (Deventer), Spangen (Rotterdam), Oude Westen (Rotterdam), Heechterp/ Schieringen (Leeuwarden) and Noord-Oost (Maastricht).

In Sweden, which has some of the most liberal immigration laws in Europe, large swaths of the southern city of Malmö – which is more than 25% Muslim – are “no-go” zones for non-Muslims. Fire and emergency workers, for example, refuse to enter Malmö’s mostly Muslim Rosengaard district without police escorts. The male unemployment rate in Rosengaard is estimated to be above 80%. When fire fighters attempted to put out a fire at Malmö’s main mosque, they were attacked by stone throwers.

In the Swedish city of Gothenburg, Muslim youth have been hurling petrol bombs at police cars. In the city’s Angered district, where more than 15 police cars have been destroyed, teenagers have also been pointing green lasers at the eyes of police officers, some of whom have been temporarily blinded.

In Gothenburg’s Backa district, youth have been throwing stones at patrolling officers. Gothenburg police have also been struggling to deal with the problem of Muslim teenagers burning cars and attacking emergency services in several areas of the city.

According to the Malmö-based Imam Adly Abu Hajar: “Sweden is the best Islamic state.”

IBD: U.S. Should Copy The Great Wall Of Saudi Arabia Tue, 20 Jan 2015 04:16:04 +0000 From Investor’s Business Daily:

Homeland Security: To keep out Islamic State terrorists, the Saudis are building a 600-mile-long barrier — complete with five layers of fencing, underground movement censors and radar cameras — on their northern border. If they can do it …

Good fences, it is said, make for good neighbors, which on a grand scale was the intent of the Great Wall of China in antiquity and the Israeli fences of more recent vintage. Both were designed to keep out intruders and to make sure all guests were invited guests. Unlike the Berlin Wall, they were built to keep hostiles out, not citizens in.

As the threat of IS terrorism grew in Iraq and Syria, Saudi Arabia decided it might be a good idea to put such a barrier between its citizens and those who might want to kill them. Last September, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud initiated construction of a multilayered barrier that eventually will stretch along the entire Iraqi border from Kuwait to Jordan.

Earlier this month, Saudi prudence seemed vindicated by a suicide bombing and gun attack that killed two Saudi border guards and their commanding officer right next to Iraq’s Anbar province. Saudi oil fields might make a tempting IS target. The group has also said its eventual goal is to take over the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

“It is the first attack by Islamic State itself against Saudi Arabia and is a clear message after Saudi Arabia entered the international coalition against it,” Mustafa Alani, an Irawi security analyst with close ties to Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry, told Reuters. The Saudis sent 30,000 troops to the border last July after IS forces swept into western Iraq and Iraqi border guards fled.

According to Jane’s Defense Weekly, the barrier will be six miles deep with 79 watch towers. Monitoring will include thermal imagers and battlefield radar systems capable of detecting individuals at a distance of 12 miles and vehicles at up to 24 miles. The barrier will be patrolled by border guards and 240 rapid-response vehicles.

Contrast the Saudi fence and border security efforts with our porous border, which recently allowed tens of thousands of “unaccompanied minors” to stream across and routinely allows drug cartels and their “coyotes” to smuggle anyone across for any purpose into the United States.

Activist filmmaker James O’Keefe recently made a six-minute video showing how he was able to cross the Rio Grande from Mexico into west Texas wearing a Halloween-esque Osama bin Laden costume with nary a Border Patrol officer in sight and no fence to worry about.

Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly, commander of the U.S. Southern Command, recently testified before Congress that our southern border constituted a threat as “existential” as any foreign power, with gangs like MS-13 and terrorist group members hiding among the tidal wave of illegals. Among the “undocumented” are significant numbers of OTMs (other than Mexicans), including those from countries considered incubators or outright state sponsors of terror.

“Clearly, criminal networks can move just about anything on these smuggling pipelines,” Kelly said last February to the House Armed Services Committee. “Terrorist organizations could seek to leverage those same smuggling routes to move operatives with intent to cause grave harm to our citizens or even quite easily bring weapons of mass destruction into the United States.”

If President Obama, instead of letting that happen, and even encouraging it with free goodies, built a fence like the Saudis, he could probably get what he calls “immigration reform” passed by a unanimous vote in both houses of Congress tomorrow.

Krauthammer: Obama invisible in response to Paris Islamic Attacks Fri, 16 Jan 2015 17:24:05 +0000 Not only did Barack Obama not send any high level representative of the United States to the Unity Rally in Paris a few days after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, he barely even registered a reaction. Clint Eastwood’s image of Obama as an empty chair couldn’t be more appropriate right now.

From The Washington Post by Charles Krauthammer:

On Sunday, at the great Paris rally, the whole world was Charlie. By Tuesday, the veneer of solidarity was exposed as tissue thin. It began dissolving as soon as the real, remaining Charlie Hebdo put out its post-massacre issue featuring a Muhammad cover that, as the New York Times put it, “reignited the debate pitting free speech against religious sensitivities.”

Krauthammer continued:

As for President Obama, he never was Charlie, not even for those 48 hours. From the day of the massacre, he has been practically invisible. At the interstices of various political rallies, he issued bits of muted, mealy-mouthed boilerplate. Followed by the now-famous absence of any high-ranking U.S. official at the Paris rally, an abdication of moral and political leadership for which the White House has already admitted error.

But this was no mere error of judgment or optics or, most absurdly, of communications in which we are supposed to believe that the president was not informed by staff about the magnitude, both actual and symbolic, of the demonstration he ignored. (He needed to be told?)

Conservative Review: The Silent Surge in Muslim Immigration Thu, 15 Jan 2015 15:20:58 +0000 Today, Daniel Horowitz Senior Editor of Conservative Review wrote of the reports of growing levels of Muslim immigration in the U.S. and what that means in light of recent attacks in France.

“Based on recent immigration trends, it is clear we have learned nothing from thwarted terror plots since 2001. However, we can change that and learn from France’s mistake and their credulous policies of national suicide.

“Instead of focusing on amnesty or expanding our legal immigration system while Obama is president, Republicans must focus on the national security aspects of immigration—before it’s too late,” said Horowitz.

The Silent Surge in Muslim Immigration

As we watch the widespread Islamic terror attacks unfold in France, many Americans are undoubtedly taking comfort in the thought that we are well protected by our strong military and distant proximity to the Islamic bastions in the East.

However, as we learned from the 9/11 terror attacks, our geography and military may protect us from a naval or air invasion, but they cannot protect us from suicidal immigration policies.  Based on recent immigration trends, we have clearly learned nothing from the ominous attacks and thwarted terror plots that have taken place since 2001.

While America has not approached the dangerous levels of Islamic immigration that France has incurred in recent years, our increase in Muslim immigration coupled with lax visa tracking has exposed us to a huge security risk.  As National Review noted in a riveting piece on the growth of domestic Islamic terror threats, “as the Muslim population in the country has expanded, so has the incidence of radicalism.”

While it’s hard to ascertain the exact level of Muslim immigration, it’s very clear the level of immigration is rapidly increasing.  According to numbers crunched by the Center for Immigration Studies based on data from the Census Bureau’s Factfinder database, the immigrant population from predominantly Muslim countries has grown from 1.7 million in 2000 to 2.7 million in 2013.

The sharpest increases from the Muslim world are from volatile countries such as Iraq, Iran, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.   This tracks closely with Pew’s estimates of 100,000 new Muslim immigrants per year, almost twice the level of the previous decade.  It is also 10% of our annual immigrant population.  If this trajectory continues, we will eventually reach the level of saturation France is currently experiencing with Muslim immigrants – roughly 10% of their population.

Additionally, there are serious concerns about the number of student visas that are granted to young males from these countries.  According to data compiled by the Brookings Institute, Saudi Arabian nationals – who accounted for 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 – were granted more student visas between 2008 and 2012 than all but three other countries.  Indeed, Arabic is the fastest growing language on U.S. college campuses and among the immigrant population in general.

It would be one thing if we had an effective visa tracking program and vetting process in place to weed out the radicalized elements from the Muslim world.  It certainly would have suited countries like France well over the past few decades.  Unfortunately, the Obama administration has repealed the National Security Exit-Entry Registration System (NSEERS), which was implemented after 9/11 to properly vet and track those who come here from risky countries on a student visa.  Last year, ABC news discovered that 58,000 foreign nationals have overstayed their student visas, of which 6,000 represent a “heightened concern.”

Additionally, we have a gaping hole in our immigration system through the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).  The VWP allows people from 38 countries to travel here without a visa.  While the VWP does not include countries from the Middle East, so many European countries have become a bastion for Islamic terror that places like France and England now present a huge problem.  If we don’t have an effective biometric exit-entry system in place, we must certainly be able to weed out security risks before they enter in the first place. Even liberal Sen. Dianne Feinstein called the VWP “the Achilles Heel of America,” following the Islamic attacks in Iran.

Do you feel safe now?

Instead of focusing on amnesty or expanding our legal immigration system while Obama is president, Republicans should focus on the national security aspects of immigration.  Legislation should include the following:

  • Implementation of a program similar to NSEERS in which we non-immigrant visas from risky parts of the world must be monitored by a local ICE office.  If someone is here on a student visa and drops out of college to work on creating bombs, we should know about it.
  • A complete overhaul of the Iraqi and Syrian refugee programs to ensure that we don’t continue letting in persecutors who claim to be persecuted.
  • The Visa Waiver Program Suspension Act (H.R. 5434), sponsored by Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), which would suspend the Visa Waiver Program until we establish control over the number of terror threats we let into the country.
  • The Expatriate Terrorist Act, sponsored by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), which would revoke the citizenship of those who fight for foreign terrorist organizations, such as ISIS.

When terror groups like ISIS threaten attacks on our homeland, they are not referring to an air or naval invasion. They are referring to current and future sleeper cells that have penetrated our vulnerable immigration system.

We can either follow France in their credulous immigration policies of national suicide or we can learn from their mistakes – before it’s too late.

Will American News Organizations Reprint the Most Newsworthy Cartoon of the Year? Tue, 13 Jan 2015 16:41:45 +0000 Since the most newsworthy cartoon of the year is on the cover of the Charlie Hebdo Magazine after the mass murder of many of that magazines cartoonists by organized, trained, Islamic Jihadis. Even though the cover is highly newsworthy, relevant and timely, I’ll bet most American publications who so quickly proclaimed,  “Je Suis Charlie” (I Am Charlie) in solidarity after the terrorist attack will fold like cheap suits when actually exhibiting free expression in the face of Islamic intimidation. What do you think?

It’s a fortunate thing that the new Charlie Hebdo cover image became known today at 4:30 p.m. ET, because that means the same deep-pocketed, overlawyered, American news organizations that have so spectacularly avoidedreprinting allegedly “offensive” CH covers thus far will have plenty of time to wrestle with their starkest yes-or-no choice yet: Are you really going to opt out of showing the most newsworthy cover image of the year, one that carries a legitimately sweet (if sardonic) message, just because it portrays (a grieving and empathetic) Mohammed?

Unsurprisingly, The New York Times is out of the gate with a resounding “yes.” The Paper of Record is in the awkward position of having a (very good) article up titled “Charlie Hebdo’s New Issue Has Muhammad on the Cover,” absent a certain, shall we say, illustrative element. In contrast, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and the L.A. Times have shared with their readers (at least online) what the hullaballoo is about.

Video: Obama Admin won’t say “Islamic Extremists” Tue, 13 Jan 2015 07:20:40 +0000 Barack Obama and his Administration refuses to identify the actual enemy we, Western Civilization must fight. Listening to Obama’s minions, one would think that Presbyterian Extremists were just as big a threat as Islamic Extremists. The Obama Administration looks and sounds like “the JV team”.

Team Obama Digs US The 19TH Hole Tue, 13 Jan 2015 04:18:55 +0000 It is hard to catalog, let alone rank, all the foreign policy, national security and diplomatic screwups of the Obama Administration. Some are plain deadly, like Benghazi and the miscalculations on Iraq and Syria which led to the rise of ISIS. Some brim over with disrespect, like the tone deaf failure to send a high profile American delegation to the unity rally in Paris after the terrorist murders last week. Some are demoralizing, such as the hacking attack on US military social media accounts.

centcom hacked screenshot

The central theme that unites them is the hubris of Team Obama and their reluctance to admit there even is a high stakes war on terror. In the Obama playbook, inherent sophistication and intellectual brilliance are enough to ensure success. So the president golfs, goes on endless vacations, pretends everything is normal and lectures the nation on the economy and more redistribution schemes (#FreeCommunityCollege!) while the world unravels.

During the Bush years, liberals and progressives couldn’t jet to Europe fast enough to denounce the Bush administration’s approach to combating terrorism, often maligning our military (during wartime) in the bargain. And now? How did Barack Obama react to one of the most spectacular terrorist attacks in history, in the capital of a key US ally, the City of Lights, and which struck at the heart of the West’s cherished values of freedom of expression and religion. Zip, nada, zilch, next-to-nothing. Obama didn’t even vote “Present” on this one.

Big Media slam Obama’s Paris snub Mon, 12 Jan 2015 16:38:41 +0000 Big Media should have been slamming Obama on many things prior to this but whatever.

From Politico:

Several members of the media are criticizing President Barack Obama’s decision to skip an anti-terrorism march in Paris over the weekend, even as leaders from 44 other countries stood together in solidarity against the killing of 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo newspaper offices last week.

Neither President Obama nor a single member of his cabinet showed up to the rally, which drew 1.5 million people in Paris, including French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On NBC’s “Today” show Monday, chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell called the snub “stunning,” and cited one former U.S. official who said the handling of the situation seemed “ham-handed.”

In an editorial for, chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper said he was “ashamed by U.S. leaders’ absence in Paris.”

“I only wish our leaders had done a better job of showing solidarity with the passion for the freedoms exemplified by the rally,” Tapper wrote.

Both of New York City’s major tabloids led Monday’s editions with bold headlines condemning the absence: “Sorry, Charlie: Obama’s team goes AWOL at Paris rally against terror,” read The New York Post. “You let the world down,” read The New York Daily News.

The Paris slight was especially confounding, because Obama seemed to have nothing else doing.

The Potential Long-Term Consequences of the Paris Shooting Wed, 07 Jan 2015 22:14:01 +0000 Crisis has a tendency to change political landscapes. This Islamic Jihadist attack on a satirical publication in the middle of Paris, France has the potential to sweep Marine Le Pen into power as head of state. This could be the first time either a woman or a “third party candidate” has come to power in France for a long time. Le Pen has said that she plans to close French borders and get France out of the Euro currency.

The horrific killing of 12 people who ran the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which published the controversial Mohammed cartoons in 2011, by suspected Muslim extremists is likely to have serious consequences. In the short run, it will result in shock, grief, and possibly counterattacks on some innocent Muslims living in France. The long-term consequences of the shooting could be monumental.

First, the French could get their first female head of state since Queen Anne’s regency during the minority of Louis XIV. Queen Anne faced a massive revolt of the nobles known as theFronde and a subsequent civil war. Ms. Marine Le Pen’s presidency could be similarly eventful.

While, as libertarians, we despise much of what Ms. Le Pen stands for, the two mainstream political parties in France, Mr. Sarkozy’s socialist center-right UPM and Mr. Hollande’s Socialist Party, have totally failed to address the legitimate concerns of the French citizens, chief among them the failure of multiculturalism and high unemployment. The country is ready to hand the reins of power to someone else.

Second, the euro will end its role as a global currency and remain a legal tender in something akin to Großdeutschland greater Germany, composed of Germany and her satellites, like the hapless Slovakia. Ms. Le Pen is mistaken in thinking that the French withdrawal from the euro will revive the French economy. French economic difficulties are primarily structural (i.e., high taxes and over-regulation), not monetary.

Be that as it may, Ms. Le Pen has set her sights on exiting the euro and, at least as far as this author is concerned, the sooner she puts the euro out of its misery, the better. They might even build her a statue in Athens. (Perhaps 2,000 years from now, it will be admired with as much reverence as Venus de Milo is revered today, but I digress…).

Third, on day two of a Le Pen presidency, border guards will return to the French frontiers. Of course, the end of the freedom of movement will be in full breach of all sorts of European treaties and conventions. (The British, by the way, would love to do the same, but cannot, because the British, being British, follow the rules. In contrast, the French, being French, will do what they have always done: follow their national interest.)
