CNET -

At their E3 presser, Nintendo chose to focus on the Wii U and its games and services, but not so much on specific launch windows or on the next generation of 3DS games.

LOS ANGELES–Nintendo had already unveiled the Wii U well before E3 started, but there were a lot of things going into this show that we didn’t know. Nintendo’s keynote spent a great deal of time detailing what the Wii U can do, what its online and app services are, and what games we can expect to see. A small amount of time was also spent on the Nintendo 3DS, but today’s event was clearly dedicated to the Wii U. More

Nintendo said Friday its new Wii U game consolewill go on sale during the next fiscal year that begins in April, and the company will look to avoid the problems it has had with its latest handheld.

“Based on the bitter experiences we have had with the Nintendo 3DS, we are making every effort to prepare so that the Wii U will not stumble during its launch,” said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.

Iwata said the final version of the console will be on display at the E3 conference which is set for June in Los Angeles. That suggests the company will begin shipping the Wii U after summer but in time for the 2012 holiday season, in keeping with past launches.

The Wii U has a set-up box similar to the current Wii, but also has a small tablet-like gamepad that is linked wirelessly and has dual thumb-controlled joysticks and control buttons. The tablet can be used together with the main box to play games shown on a TV, or independently on its own smaller screen. More

By Chuck Muth

August 11, 2011

I hear it all the time. Folks longing for the “old days” of family, neighborhood and community in America. When people, not the government, took care of themselves and watched out for each other. When it took parents to raise a child, but everyone in the village kept a watchful eye in a supporting role. When things were simpler, safer, better.

Is that version of America dead and gone? Nope. I found it again this week in Mission Bay, California – but you can find it all over the country. It’s in….family campgrounds.

Where kids are free to safely roam the neighborhood, untethered and unsupervised. And if your child falls and gets a boo-boo, you know some other parent will slap on a Band-Aid or bring them to you.

Class envy? Fahgettaboutit. You’ve got families camping in a WalMart tent right next to families “roughing it” in $75,000 luxury RVs. Does anyone care? Heck no. Here, have a cold beer.

Racism? Fahgettaboutit. The white kids are in the pool with the black kids who are in the pool with the brown kids who are in the pool with the yellow kids and, guess what? They’re all just kids. Fat kids, skinny kids, kids that climb on rocks. No one cares. It’s just not an issue.

Oh, and get this: Kids are playing games with other kids! No, I’m not talking about Wii’s and Nintendos. I’m talking about riding bikes and scooters and throwing a Frisbee or kicking a soccer ball or swinging for the fences with a whiffle ball bat.

Heck, I’ve even seen kids playing, get this, CHECKERS! With each other. On an actual checkerboard, not a computer screen! TVs, videos….who needs ‘em?

Oh, and get this: There is ZERO concern for children inhaling second-hand smoke. Kids are actually sitting around campfires and charcoal grills and not a single government health nanny is trying to slap a warning label on bundles of firewood.

What, you forgot to bring a wrench to tighten up your kid’s handle bars? Here, borrow mine. Dead battery? Somebody’s got cables. Light’s out at ten; quiet ‘til eight. It’s just common courtesy.

Oh, and get this: As you walk around the grounds, people actually acknowledge you and say “hello” rather than avoid eye contact at all costs. Heck, you might even start up a whole conversation with a complete stranger and become best friends….even if only for a week.

Folks don’t come onto your property unless invited. You can leave your bikes out all night. No locks on tent doors. It’s America as it was. It’s America as it’s supposed to be. Alas, it’s an America that, sadly, all too many children today will never know.

Oops. Gotta run. Time for the scavenger hunt!

From the BBC:

Gaming giant Nintendo has been showing off its next-generation Wii game console, at the E3 games show in Los Angeles.

The much-anticipated console, dubbed Wii U, comes with a controller that features a touchscreen and camera.

The original Wii console was hugely popular but Nintendo has faced pressure from rivals with similar devices.

Nintendo hopes the new console will create a new genre of gaming.

Wii U will feature a set-top box similar to the first generation console.

But the 6.2-inch touchscreen controller comes with a front-facing camera as well as the more traditional buttons of a Wii remote and a motion detector.

It will broadcast high-definition video and can be used to make video calls and browse the web.
