If you’ve been following the e-fairness issue, you’ve probably heard stories from lots of retailers dealing in books, records, gifts, and other merchandise who are suffering because of the unfair advantage online retailers have over us local, brick-and-mortar guys.  But I haven’t heard anyone talking about stores specializing in equipment for hunting, fishing, or other outdoor activities, so I thought I’d throw in my two cents as well.

The bottom line:  The sales tax loophole hurts sporting and outdoors stores too.  Maybe even worse; we really need this Marketplace Fairness Act to pass as soon as possible.

Many sporting and outdoor stores have items people buy last-minute, like bait, fishing line, camping supplies, etc.  But those are often low-margin items.  If we’re to keep our doors open and our workers employed, we depend on sales of big-ticket items like gear like apparel, tents, sleeping bags, knives, bows, fishing poles, guns etc., which can all be bought online “tax-free.”  (They aren’t actually tax-free, but that’s another story.)

When someone comes into my store, they can be sure to have their needs attended to, their questions answered, and access to plenty of inventory. This is all to make sure that my customers are completely satisfied with their purchases and it’s why I love what I do.

We not only care about our customers; but also, our community.  Sponsoring a local little league team, donating live bait to youth fishing programs, and hosting hunter safety classes at no cost are a few activities where we actively engage.   There isn’t an online store that can match those contributions to our hometowns.

But lately, more and more customers are using local stores as showrooms, coming in and perusing inventory, with no intent of making a purchase. They then will return home, turn on their computers, and buy the same product from several online retailers or eBay.

I work very hard to keep my prices low. But there is no way I can compete with these online stores and a government-subsidized price advantage of up to 10 percent. The fact of the matter is, I am legally bound to charge sales tax, and online retailers are not.

The worst part is, we know about each online sale, because often times, we’ll run the background check for the gun being purchased online.  We may have 3 in stock, and it comes in and out of our doors, tax-free, purchased online.

I’m one of the last guys to call for new taxes.  But this is clearly not a new tax; it’s the government playing favorites.  And I’m not for that in any way, shape, or form.

That is why I am urging everyone to support the Marketplace Fairness Act. This piece of legislation will close the tax loophole, and ensure all businesses get a fair deal when it comes to collecting sales tax.

Many Americans are intimidated by the IRS, and for good reason.

In recent weeks, the IRS has admitted to unlawfully targeting conservative groups in an effort to silence the president’s critics in the middle of an election.

This abuse of power must be fully investigated and those involved must be held accountable.

But that’s not all.

We need to make sure this never happens again.

And the only way to prevent our government from abusing its power is for us – we the people — to take that power away.

It’s time to abolish the IRS.

How many other times has the IRS discriminated against people it doesn’t like, and how much more often will it occur if the government is allowed to control our health care?

Enough is enough.

We need to reform our tax system so our government no longer needs an army of IRS agents to police every aspect of our lives. No more discrimination, no more intimidation, and no IRS enforcement of Obamacare.

We need a tax code that is simple, fair, and that protects our freedoms.

We can’t let Washington sweep this abuse under the rug. We must take action to prevent it from happening again.

Who Voted to Let the UN Grab Your Guns?

Over the weekend, we came four votes away from the United States Senate giving our Constitutional rights over to the United Nations. In a 53-46 vote, the senate narrowly passed a measure that will stop the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

The Statement of Purpose from the bill read:
To uphold Second Amendment rights and prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

The U.N. Small Arms Treaty, which has been championed by the Obama Administration, would have effectively placed a global ban on the import and export of small firearms. The ban would have affected all private gun owners in the U.S., and had language that would have implemented an international gun registry on all private guns and ammo.

Astonishingly, 46 of our United States Senators were willing to give away our Constitutional rights to a foreign power.

Obamacare is a monstrosity.  The negative consequences of this truly awful legislation are becoming increasingly clear to all Americans – massive debt, mountains of red tape and less flexibility for you and your family.

President Obama and Senate Democrats are expected to spend an unprecedented amount of money to defend against repeal.  We can’t allow Harry Reid and his network of left-wing SuperPAC donors to get away with it.
