Interfaith Friends of Israel Call on Senators to Reject Hagel Nomination

INTERFAITH FRIENDS OF ISRAEL CALL ON
SENATORS TO REJECT HAGEL NOMINATION
Washington, D.C.: On the eve of the critical procedural vote on the nomination of Chuck Hagel to become the next Secretary of Defense, ten national leaders of different faiths – but sharing a common commitment to Israel and its people – issued a joint appeal to members of the United States Senate to reject this appointment. In a letter to each Senator delivered before they act today on Majority Leader Harry Reid’s motion to cut off debate on this controversial nominee, the authors declared:
“Notwithstanding assurances he has made privately to your colleague, Sen. Chuck Schumer, in the course of his confirmation hearing and in other settings, Sen. Hagel’s longstanding hostility towards Jews and Israel is reprehensible and should disqualify him from this sensitive post.”
The ten leaders represent millions of Americans whose religious beliefs, deeply held values and strategic understanding of our times prompts them to champion the closest of ties between America and its only reliable ally in the Middle East, the State of Israel. They warn that:
“…The next few years may be among the most turbulent in the history of U.S.-Israeli relations. This is the case thanks to the developing perfect storm of: continuing and intensifying violence perpetrated by al Qaeda and other jihadists throughout the Middle East and adjacent regions; the ascendancy there and elsewhere of a Muslim Brotherhood equally committed to Israel’s destruction; and an Iranian regime that explicitly and repeatedly declares its intention to wipe Israel off the map nearing the realization of its nuclear weapon ambitions.”
The authors – who include Pastor John C. Hagee, National Chairman of Christians United for Israel, Mort Klein, President of the Zionist Organization of America and Rick Santorum, former U.S. Senator and Co-Founder of Patriot Voices, Rev. Rick Joyner, President of the Oak Initiative and Beth Gilinsky, President of the National Conference on Jewish Affairs – cite evidence that “bespeak[s] a deep-seated animus” towards Jews and Israel that will surely dangerously influence Senator Hagel’s conduct should he become Defense Secretary.”
There is reason to believe that the referenced examples of Senator Hagel’s seriously defective judgment with respect to the Jewish State and its enemies – and ours – are but the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Unfortunately, if the Senate acts to cut-off debate on the Hagel nomination today, it will allow the nominee to withhold such information and probably other materials that would be even more damning. That would be doubly appalling for the fact that Sen. Hagel formally and publicly committed to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin that all requests for such data would be honored. (See a relevant column in today’s Washington Times (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/feb/26/the-case-against-chuck-hagel/) by Frank J. Gaffney, Jr., President of the Center for Security Policy which facilitated this letter.)

Senator Harry Reid
522 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Senator Reid:
We write to urge you to oppose Chuck Hagel’s nomination to become the next Secretary of Defense. The evidence that has accumulated in recent weeks makes one thing clear: Notwithstanding assurances he has made privately to your colleague, Sen. Chuck Schumer, in the course of his confirmation hearing and in other settings, Sen. Hagel’s longstanding hostility towards Jews and Israel is reprehensible and should disqualify him from this sensitive post.
That is especially true at the present moment. As you are well aware, the next few years may be among the most turbulent in the history of U.S.-Israeli relations. This is the case thanks to the developing perfect storm of: continuing and intensifying violence perpetrated by al Qaeda and other jihadists throughout the Middle East and adjacent regions; the ascendancy there and elsewhere of a Muslim Brotherhood equally committed to Israel’s destruction; and an Iranian regime that explicitly and repeatedly declares its intention to wipe Israel off the map nearing the realization of its nuclear weapon ambitions.
Particularly under such circumstances, the myriad examples of former Senator Hagel’s hostility towards Jews and the Jewish State cannot be dismissed on the basis of disavowals or apologies that clearly have much more to do with the needs of his imperiled confirmation than with a change of heart. Consider just a few of the cases in point:
· Sen. Hagel’s long-held notions about the “Jewish lobby” intimidating Senators.
· His moral equivalence between Israel and those bent on its destruction.
· His view that Israel’s putative nuclear arsenal is more worrying than an Iranian one.
· His claim that the State Department is an “adjunct to the Israeli Foreign Ministers’ office.”
· His contention that Israel is becoming “an apartheid state.” And
· His co-authorship of a report that recommends inserting U.S. forces on the West Bank to facilitate the establishment of a Palestinian state there. Such a step would inevitably embroil us in that conflict – probably, in due course, with the effect of protecting Palestinian terrorists against Israeli defensive measures.
All these bespeak a deep-seated animus that will surely dangerously influence Senator Hagel’s conduct should he become Defense Secretary.
No true friend of the Jewish people and Israel can support that outcome. We call upon you to preclude it from happening.
Sincerely,
Pastor John C. Hagee, Founder and National Chairman of Christians United for Israel
Mort Klein, President, Zionist Organization of America
Hon. Rick Santorum, Co-Founder, Patriot Voices
Rev. Rick Joyner, President, The Oak Initiative
Beth Gilinsky, President, National Conference on Jewish Affairs

Conservative Leaders Defend Sen. Ted Cruz for Rocking the Boat

Conservative leaders came out swinging against those attacking Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex).
From CNSNews:
(CNSNews.com) – Conservative leaders are voicing their support for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) after the freshman senator came under fire from some Senate colleagues and liberal pundits for his tough questioning of Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel, criticism that included equating Cruz with the late anti-communist Senator Joe McCarthy (R-Wisc.)
“Senator Ted Cruz came to Washington to advance conservative policies, not play by the same old rules that have relegated conservatives, and their ideas, to the back bench,” Michael Needham, president of the influential Heritage Action said on Tuesday. “It should come as absolutely no surprise the Washington Establishment – be it the liberal media, entrenched special interests or even wayward Republicans – are now attacking him in the press for following through on his promises.”
Frank Cannon, president of the American Principles Project, said: “It’s about time someone annoyed those who have been complacent in doing what is necessary to get the country back on track. We applaud Senator Ted Cruz’s dedication to conservative principles and being an articulate spokesman for those principles. We are pleased he is shaking up Washington and doing exactly what the people of Texas elected him to do.”
Cruz came under fire last week after tough questioning of Hagel, nominated by President Barack Obama to replace outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
Cruz – in a move not seen in Senate confirmation hearings – used video recording of Hagel’s own statements to question the nominee and asked particularly tough questions concerning Hagel’s finances.
MSNBC host Chris Matthews said on Feb. 14 that Cruz’s questioning reminded him of the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s (R-Wisc.) anti-communism investigations, calling the conservative senator from Texas a jackal.
“You know, I don’t often say it, and I rarely say it, but there was echoes of Joe McCarthy there. Really strong echoes,” Matthews said on his Hardball program. “Well, the jackals are in the street tonight.”
Some senators, who refused to be named, reportedly criticized Cruz anonymously, telling Politico that the new senator’s style would hurt his ability to “be an influential legislator.”
“They don’t get to know the Senate or the other senators, they just start talking, and that takes away from [Cruz’s] ability to be an influential legislator,” an anonymous Republican senator apparently told Politico on Feb. 14.
Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) echoed the Joe McCarthy comparisons, warning that Cruz should be “more careful” with his public statements.
“In this country we had a terrible experience with innuendo and inference when Joe McCarthy hung out in the United States Senate, and I just think we have to be more careful,” she told the New York Times on Feb. 15.
Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) also criticized Cruz saying that the Texas senator should not have been “disrespectful.”
“All I can say is that the appropriate way to treat Senator Hagel is to be as tough as you want to be, but don’t be disrespectful or malign his character,” McCain told the Times.
Conservative leaders defended Cruz, saying that the Tea Party favorite was doing exactly what his supporters wanted him to do: rock the boat in Washington.
“Senator Cruz is committed to repealing ObamaCare, preserving the Second Amendment, lowering taxes and reducing government spending. For advancing these conservative principles, he is under attack. Rather than whispering condemnation off the record to reporters, GOP senators should follow his lead, said ForAmerica Chairman Brent Bozell.
One of Cruz’s early supporters, David Bossie of Citizens United, praised Cruz for “fighting the tough fights.”
“Citizens United Political Victory Fund was an early supporter of Ted Cruz and we are encouraged that he is standing up to the establishment as a U.S. senator,” said Bossie. “Fighting the tough fights for conservative principles is why Ted Cruz was elected to the U.S Senate.”
Disclosure: Brent Bozell is also the president of the Media Research Center, the parent organization of CNSNews.com.

NRSC: Statement by Chairman Moran on Senator Johanns Retirement

Statement by U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS), Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, on the announcement by U.S. Senator Mike Johanns and the 2014 Nebraska Senate race:
“Mike Johanns epitomized principled leadership during his near three decades of public service, always putting the needs of Nebraskans first. I thank him for his service and wish he and his family the very best in their next chapter. The Cornhusker state will look to continue its strong conservative tradition by electing an equally dedicated Republican leader in 2014.”
GOP Sen. Johanns of Nebraska to retire:
GOP Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska will not seek re-election next year, telling his supporters in an e-mail that the time is right after three decades in public service.
“With everything in life there is a time and season,” said Johanns, a former U.S. Agriculture secretary and governor.
Johanns was first elected to the Senate in 2008. He recently bucked his party by saying he will vote to confirm fellow Nebraskan Chuck Hagel for Defense secretary — only the second GOP senator to support the embattled Obama nominee.
Democrats are likely to take a run at Nebraska next year, in part because of the need to expand the playing field. Democrats will defend 21 Senate seats in 2014, compared with 14 for Republicans.
ACU Announces U.S. Senator Ted Cruz to Address CPAC 2013

America’s largest gathering of conservative leaders and activists will be held Thursday, March 14 – Saturday, March 16, 2013.
“In just a few months, Ted Cruz has become a strong, independent conservative voice in the Senate,” said ACU Chairman Al Cardenas. “Senator Cruz personifies the theme of this year’s CPAC — America’s Future: The Next Generation of Conservatives.”
In 2012, Ted Cruz was elected as the 34th U.S. Senator from Texas. A passionate fighter for limited government, economic growth, and the Constitution, he won a decisive victory in both the Republican primary and the general election, despite having never before been elected to office. Senator Cruz formerly served as the Solicitor General of Texas, the state’s chief lawyer before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Senate Conservatives Fund Step 1: Defeat Red State Democrats

Fellow Conservatives:
President Obama addressed the nation last night and proposed more plans to grow the government and reduce our personal freedoms. He’s attacking liberty on multiple fronts to distract and demoralize us. I’m writing to encourage you to stay focused and to direct your frustration with this president toward impacting the mid-term elections. If we work together, we can win several Senate races and stop Obama’s agenda.
The first step to winning a conservative majority in the U.S. Senate is to defeat the Democrats in red states where we know a majority of voters support the principles of freedom that make this country great.
We’re all interested in our home state elections, but changing the Senate requires us all to look beyond the senators we hear about in our local news and work together to win battleground races across the nation.
RED STATE DEMOCRATS
Democrats are defending Senate seats in seven states that President Obama lost in 2012. These seats are in Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina, South Dakota, and West Virginia.
There are many other races that hold promise and we won’t write any of them off, but the races in these seven states offer us the best opportunities to replace liberals with conservatives.
We must do two things to win these seats:
(1) Define the liberal incumbents.
The Democratic incumbents in these red states are vulnerable and they know it. It’s why one of them — U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) — has already given up and announced his retirement.
The rest are trying to quickly reinvent themselves in the eyes of the voters. These liberals know that if they say they’re “moderate” enough times, people will begin to believe it.
We can’t let that happen.
Here are the six Democrats still running in red states who must be defined, defeated, and ultimately replaced with principled conservatives:
- MARK BEGICH - Alaska
- MARK PRYOR – Arkansas
- MARY LANDRIEU – Louisiana
- MAX BAUCUS – Montana
- KAY HAGAN – North Carolina
- TIM JOHNSON – South Dakota
Many of these Senators are nice people and may even have the best of intentions, but the policies they support are destroying this country and it’s up to us to move them into a different line of work.
With your help, SCF will identify their weakness and survey voters to see which messages resonate most. Then we’ll begin educating voters about their liberal records.
(2) Recruit conservative challengers.
The next few months are probably the most important of the entire election cycle. If we find good conservative challengers, we’re in the game. But if we don’t, we will likely get stuck with moderate Republicans who either can’t win or won’t fight for our principles if they do.
The Republican establishment is already looking for candidates in each of these battleground states. They know that the quicker they find someone and start raising money for them, the harder it will be for conservatives to nominate an alternative.
We’re talking to many prospective candidates right now and will do everything we can to recruit exceptional people to fight for America’s future.
Your support for the Senate Conservatives Fund is the best weapon we have in the battle to flip these seats from liberal to conservative. It helps us define liberal incumbents and recruit outstanding challengers. The stronger we are now, the more likely we’ll be able to win next year.
Thank you for being willing to fight for America’s future.
Best regards,
